Today, NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development has launched a new call for proposals for the programme Research for Inclusive Development in Sub-Saharan Africa (RIDSSA). The call focuses on joint research and knowledge sharing projects on the cost-effectiveness of social protection programmes in Benin, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Ruanda or Uganda. The call has been developed in close collaboration with the Knowledge Platform for Development Policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

Social Protection is a call for research proposals to be submitted to WOTRO by consortia consisting of at least two research organisations from across the world, including at least one from a low or middle income country, preferably from one of the countries mentioned above. Practitioner organisations are invited to join the consortia as well.

Effectivity of Social Protection programmes

Research proposals should aim to enhance the insight in the cost-effectiveness of social protection programmes in achieving inclusive growth, compared to other social policies. More specifically, research funded through this call should contribute to new evidence-based knowledge on where, how and under which conditions social protection programmes are more effective than other interventions with the same goal. In addition, the research should contribute to insights among policy makers in Africa and the Netherlands on how inclusive development objectives can be integrated in the design, implementation and evaluation of social protection interventions.

Budget and deadline

The total budget for this call is 2.1 million euros. A maximum of 300,000 euro can be applied for per research proposal, for a project with a maximum duration of 24 months.

To be eligible for the competition, proposals should be preceded by a Letter of Intent. The deadline for submitting this letter to WOTRO is 1 September 2014. The proposals themselves can be submitted to WOTRO until 1 October 2014.

More information on focus, criteria and procedure is available in the call for proposals, which can be downloaded from the RIDSSA funding page.

Social Protection is the third call in a row within the Research for Inclusive Development in Sub-Saharan Africa (RIDSSA) programme. The two earlier calls focused on Strategic Actors for inclusive development and on Productive Employment. These calls recently resulted in the funding of ten new research projects. Summaries of all projects are available here.
