Share-Net International

Share-Net International, the name of the Knowledge Platform on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) aims to contribute to the SRHR agenda by improving knowledge in this area. The key vision of the agenda is that people should be able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, the freedom to decide how many children they want and with whom, and access to good-quality care to meet their sexual and reproductive health needs.

The Platform combines the expertise and strengths of Dutch organizations, the private and public sectors, Southern partners and key international actors working in the area of SRHR to achieve Millennium Development Goals 5 and 6* and contribute to the post-2015 agenda. The Platform intends to strengthen the role of knowledge in developing evidence-based policies and practices. It also aims to ensure that resources are used strategically and to maximum effect, especially in relation to the four core areas of Dutch policy on SRHR:

  • Better information and greater freedom of choice for young people about their sexuality
  • Improved access to reproductive health commodities
  • Better sexual and reproductive health care (during pregnancy and childbirth, including safe abortion)
  • Greater respect for the sexual and reproductive rights of groups who are currently denied these rights.

The Platform and its Secretariat are hosted by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT). The Platform consists of four or five knowledge nodes and the Secretariat. Share-Net, established in 2001, will function as the Dutch knowledge node. New members from NGOs, ministries, universities, knowledge institutes and the private sector will be invited to join this node. The other three or four nodes will be established in existing SRHR institutes or networks abroad and will serve as conduits for conducting situation assessments, defining research priorities, facilitating research participation by country institutions and hosting the local knowledge base/Platform. They will also promote the participation in the Platform of key international partners and regional and national actors and networks active in the field of SRHR based in their countries.

A Steering Committee selected from and by members, provides substantive direction to the Platform and the Secretariat.
